Self
Supported, Unsanctioned, Do it yourself. FAT ASS RUN
56km
Ultramarathon and 28km 'Sensible Option"
7am
Sunday 3rd January 2010
- Start at 7am from the Dromana
information centre (big yellow building in the small park on the
corner of the Point Nepean Hwy and Permien St. Dromana (Melways
159 F7)
- We do not want to put local
authorities off side. This is NOT an officially sanctioned event,
runners participating in the run do so at their own risk
- There are a number of
boardwalk sections covered in chicken wire. Large runners (80kg
plus) are advised to take it very easy as some of the boards are
rotten. If you bound through at full throttle you may break a
board (and maybe an ankle too)
- This course is amongst the
most scenic in Australia. Runners are treated to a range of
surfaces and settings: single track, coastal trail, grassy trail,
dirt road and forest canopy.
- The run starts with a
demanding uphill, rising 1,000ft in the first 3km, providing
stunning views over Port Phillip Bay. The 5km section approaching
the 28km mark at Cape Schanck takes runners along a breathtaking
track, along the cliffs that rise above Bass Strait. This section
runs past Bushrangers Bay, which is only accessible on foot: it is
a special reward.
Logistics
Downloading a trail map is
really important. Despite a magic trailmarking
fairy, every year someone gets lost. Don't let it be you.
Download this map, laminate it, or tattoo it on your
forearm.
Start Facilities: Water, shops
close by, toilets will be open, plenty of parking.
Time Limit: No time limit, this
is not an official event
Entry Fee: None, this is not an
official event
Aid: Water is generally kindly
dropped on the course in two equidistant locations apart from Dromana
and the Cape Schanck turnaround.
Hydration: It will be hot.
Do not attempt this run without carrying a bottle or camelbak, There
is a kiosk at Cape Schanck, the 28km point.
If you wish to run 28km and end
your journey at Cape Schanck then you need to organize your own
transport back. If you can't achieve this then you may well be able
to score a lift with other runners who have car shuffled, or perhaps
call Peninsula Radio Cabs on 03 5981 2233. Coolrunning.com.au is also a great
way of organizing transport with other participants.
